There were 5 Stein brothers who lived in Koln Germany in Prussia. Louis was the oldest. Considerably before the American Civil War was when Bismark was trying to subdue all the little German dutchies into one united Germany, all able bodied males 18 years or older were drafted into the army and the fathers decided to send his sons to America
Louis (Groosvater) being the oldest and newly married to Caroline was in charge and promised to take care of the youngest brother (12 or 13 years at the time). They went to Bloomington IL and started a brewery. Herman E, Clina (?) and Caroline were born there. The baby died then Caroline.
Caroline’s father back in Germany became a widower and married his brother’s widow who had a daughter named Catherine Schmidt, so Caroline and Catherine were cousins and step-sisters. They all came to Blooomington to visit Groosvater. Catherine and Grosvater had 3 children, Edmund, Otto and Emma who died as a baby.
The brewery was not a great success so further west they went and got a farm implement agency in Harvard (?) NE. The youngest brother (WHAT WAS HIS NAME?) went to the SW corner of New Mexico, married a Mexican girl, had 13 children, and started an Indian trading post. Also had a town and peak named after him. (THIS IS NOT CLEAR..THE PEAK SEEMS TO BE NAMED AFTER SOMEBODY ELSE)
Grossvater was tall, had dark hair and grey eyes. “Kleinie” was small and had blue eyes and blonde hair.
Herman E was county clerk in Clay Center NE, married Jennie Shane, moved to Hastings and started a department store with his brother Edmund.
QUESTION:
Who were the 5 brothers who came to the US and in what year?
